Urban Studio Brooklyn Fishmobile Ready For Launch (Sat July 5th, 2pm)

July 3rd, 2008 by Ethan

Urban Studio Brooklyn - FishmobileAs mentioned a couple of weeks ago, Urban Studio Brooklyn — a project of the non-profit Habana Works, founded by Brooklyn entrepreneur and Habana Outpost owner Sean Meenan — has been developing the wild, funky, human-powered mobile fishing clinic/wetlab called the Fishmobile!

Guess what?

It’s ready for its maiden voyage!

WHEN:
Saturday, July 5, 2008 at 2pm

WHERE:
Habana Outpost (757 Fulton Street, Brooklyn, NY 11217)
With procession afterwards to East River Park in the Lower East Side, Manhattan.

The Fishmobile will launch at 2pm, Saturday July 5th from the Habana Outpost at 757 Fulton Street in Brooklyn. Come with your bike to ride along on this maiden voyage to the Lower East Side Ecology Center in East River Park! Click here (pdf) for all the launch details.

The human-powered vehicle/spectacle was built by student participants working alongside seasoned design professionals and will be used to deliver environmental education programs in waterfront parks and informal open spaces. USBK participants received instruction from bicycle and alternative transport groups, waterfront orgs, youth building groups, and NYC fishing and boating folks to get their creative juices flowing. Scouring the city for materials –- wrecked rowboats, snagged sails, flat tires and the like – and working closely with a team of rehab and design professionals, USBK participants then took their ideas from drawing board to reality.

Check out a neat slideshow of the design/build progress!

Note from Habana Works’ Kate Zidar: The Outpost opens at noon if you want to come early and fortify yourself for the ride! I mean with food of course.
