The Wheel Of Life: New York Area Food Wheel For Fresh, Local, Sustainable, Seasonal Produce
December 8th, 2008 by EthanThe wheel of time marches on. November, December, 2009, 2010, and on and on.
I don’t know about you all, but I feel like I’m locked in a perpetual dance between thinking ahead and catching up.
Now that we, as a society, are starting to pay more attention to local sustainable food that surely means we will be seeing more and more seasonal foods. The number one seasonal food holiday, Thanksgiving, may have come and gone, but with winter upon us people are thinking about how to access sustainable food in the chilly months. And some of us are making our New Year’s resolutions (eat better? be healthier? live greener?).
Luckily enough there is just the thing to help those of us in the tri-state metropolitan area make 2009 a big year for sustainable food: the New York Area Food Wheel.
New Yorkers Carlin Greenstein (a chef and wellness coach) and Annie Stranger (artist and graphic designer) designed the wheel and have it for sale on their website Chew On This.
Our food wheel is designed to help you figure out the best times of the year to buy locally grown produce—food picked at the height of freshness that’s jam-packed with vitamins, minerals, and positive energy. Just turn the wheel to reveal the peak season and overall availability of our favorite fruits and vegetables. We’ve arranged the list from the most available (potatoes) to the least (asparagus)—so you’ll know the best time to indulge in your favorite foods.

H/t to Sustainable Table’s blog The Daily Table and the healthy living email list Vital Juice (fyi they have a N.Y. local edition in addition to a daily blast).
This is a slight tangent, but when I think about seasonal food and the seasons, my thoughts drift to one of the truly amazing representations of the cyclical nature of the world in which we live. Namely, the Buddhist Wheel of Life or the Bhavacakra (click here for an interactive tour).
It is a marvelous image of a complicated world, and one of my favorite pieces of art. A version resides here in NYC in the amazing collection of Himalayan art at the Rubin Museum (150 West 17th Street, Manhattan). Go check it out.

this wheel is something that we must pay attention to as the need to live more sustainably becomes a necessity. What great asset to a more mindful world and great gifts for the holidays.
