Nzinga Townhomes Green-up Bed-Stuy

And just when you were about to write off Bed-Stuy as the last place on earth you’d expect to have a green building project.  Sure we know all about Battery Park City and the New York Times building and the green townhomes they’re building in Boerum Hill, but Bedford-Stuyvesant????

Yep, it’s true.  Developer Yolande Nicholson has teamed up with green architect James Garrison to create the Nzinga Townhomes. Garrison, famed for his work on modular homes, and Nicholson, a Caribbean-American attorney and former employee of Restoration Plaza in Bed-Stuy, have teamed up to create a modular home design that is both green and Afro-centric. 

Named after a famed African queen from the 14th century, Nzinga Townhomes feature green walls, a rain-water harvesting system, natural heating and cooling systems, Prodema coated exterior walls, a condensing hot water heating system and warm Caribbean interiors.  By utilizing modular, off-site construction Garrison is able to cut construction time in half, as site preparation runs parallel with building construction.  Modular design also enables tighter design tolerances, as the construction process takes place inside in a stable environment, not outside as with normal construction.  Finally modular construction means that construction materials are not shipped to the site in a congested urban area, but rather to a factory in an easily accessible rural location.
