A Walk Around The Bay: BRIC Covers Sheepshead Bites, Recreational Fishing

July 17th, 2008 by Ethan

BRIC’s new-ish series A Walk Around the Blog interviews Ned Berke of Sheephead Bites and Captain Sapanara of Brooklyn VI Fishing — a Sheepshead Bay recreational fishing outfit with over 40 years experience on the bay.

The video interview — interspersed with great fishing footage — focuses in on the city’s unfortunate gradual phasing-out of Sheepshead Bay’s fishing community. It used to be called Brooklyn’s “Gold Coast” because of the vibrant fishing community. Now it is, sadly, just another footnote in the condo-ization and gentrification of all that is — or was — Brooklyn.

Watch this great piece:

Hopefully we can help bring it back.

Write to Mayor Bloomberg and tell him to stop the destruction and condo-ization of one of Brooklyn’s classic forgotten communities.

And props to BRIC, Ned, and Captain Sapanara for telling the story that New Yorkers need to know. Don’t forget to check out Sheepshead Bites, there’s a lot of great stuff on Ned’s blog including a call to the community to get involved in the development of a new green space in Sheepshead Bay, the Brigham Street Park.
