‘Trouble The Water’ Award-Winning Katrina Documentary Shows At BAM Rose Cinemas (Sun 6/8)

June 4th, 2008 by Ethan

Trouble The WaterAs someone who has enormous love for the city of New Orleans as well as the city of Brooklyn, it heartening — while troubling — to see a powerful story of surviving in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Katrina told directly through the eyes of two regular (yet extremely talented) folks from New Orleans and directed by two regular (yet extremely talented) folks based in Brooklyn.

The result of the collaboration being the stunning and award-winning documentary Trouble The Water.

The simple words used to describe the film and review its contents belie the truly immeasurable power of putting distinctly human characteristics on the gravity of the worst disaster in American history.

Trouble The WaterThe story of New Orleans 9th Ward residents and an underground New Orleans bounce hip-hop artist — Kimberly Rivers Roberts and her husband — is told in dramatic fashion by intertwining Ms. Roberts’ dramatic footage with “a mix of verite and in-your-face filmmaking” by Brooklyn-based director/producers Tia Lessin and Carl Deal. In addition to their own remarkable work, the producers are veterans of some of filmmaker Michael Moore’s most acclaimed films.

Brooklyn is lucky enough to host one of the few early screenings before the film hits nation-wide. See it this coming weekend:
