M. Fine Lumber: Free Reclaimed Wood Scraps

September 3rd, 2008 by Ethan

GBK reader Joe P. writes:

My name is Joe and I work at M. Fine Lumber Co. in Brooklyn. I just wanted to inform you that we have free lumber scraps if anyone is interested its all from torn down NYC buildings. We are in the process of downsizing and really don’t want to trash it or chip it up. That wouldn’t be the green thing to do. The company has been around for 75 years and has salvaged more then 1,000,000 board feet off lumber. Maybe you can help us out. Call me M-F 7-5 at 718-381-5200.

UPDATE:

Several people have posted comments asking for wood supplies. If you have any questions or requests, please contact Joe at M. Fine Lumber by phone or on the web here:

Thanks so much for this tip. Everyone was super nice when I went and picked up a wonderful load of free wood this morning (with my four-year-old twins in town, no less). Their first preference would be to load a forklift-full directly into your vehicle; my van was too small for that, so an employee helped me load in by hand. Bring work gloves … a lot of the wood is rough cut or splintery, and/or has rusty old nails still in it.

I have a studio in an 1840s wharehouse, need to do a small buildout, 10′x10′ raised floor. Is there any chance I could get some struts and flooring?

  6. Pax Says:

Is there any of this left? I’m just looking for a few planks that are heavy on the ‘character’ and preferably fairly wide (12″+?) to make some coat racks out of…

    Hi,

I am a CU student building a demonstration roof garden on campus in Morningside Heights, and for it we plan to construct raised beds for vegetable growing! I was wondering if you have some wooden boards for such building requirements?

    Happy New Year!

Hi, I am so glad I found this site! I am looking for 6×6 or wider timbers that measure 12ft. or + in length. I would need 12 or more of these but I would be happy to take fewer if that is all available. We are beginning a project in the living room that will eventually continue to the kitchen so I would be happy to pick up more! I am trying so hard to do this project all GREEN… I am also looking for flooring about 300 sq ft. I am very flexible with the look as long as it is rustic or could be made to look rustic. I have access to box trucks & man power & storage for the materials as I work… Please let me know what you have available asap & I would be overjoyed to pick up! Thanks so much in advance, DenaLeigh

    Hi,

Is this still a valid offer? I see the original post dates back from September 09. Is there any free lumber still left? I am trying to build a large work table from recycled lumber. Thank you so much!
