Greening The Ridge: Summer Solstice in Bay Ridge
June 26th, 2008 by EthanSome good green times at SRWA’s Greening The Ridge green fest on the pier last weekend.
Some really great Brooklyn green orgs were there: Transportation Alternatives, CUE, Bettencourt Green Building Supplies, Green Spa NY, Narrows Botanical Garden, Department of Sanitation (got some cool recycling stuff from them), and lots more.
The buzz was great and it was the kind of event that as you got closer to the pier, you could feel the positive energy. It was a great vibe, and it has the potential to become a bigger and bigger annual green event in Brooklyn.
Of course, I was also pretty surprised at how many people were out there fishing.
Quite a few, as it turned out:

People pulled up all kinds of stuff, like this guy. Look at the feelers in front of the fins there, wild stuff.
A bunch of flounders as well…
…And then this happened. BAM!
Yes… That is a 41″ striped bass!
After Greening The Ridge and the fishing madness, I went for a stroll with my friend to the Narrows Botanical Garden, just around the corner from 69th Street Pier. It was great. Highly recommended that everyone go there.

That weird orange fish with the feelers in front of the fins is a sea robin. I’ve caught a couple in Jamaica Bay. They’re very ugly.
