Free “My Green New York” Bags At Brooklyn Borough Hall Green Market (Tue 5/27)

May 23rd, 2008 by Ethan

Brooklyn Declares, “Let’s Get Green!”

It must be Spring. People seem to be in the giving mood. First Haagen-Dazs with the wildflower seed give-away; and now a team of Brooklyn pols, companies, and environmental organizations come together to provide greenmarket shoppers free canvas bags to replace icky plastic predecessors.

On Tuesday, May 27th at 1:30 PM, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, Council Members Gale A. Brewer and Simcha Felder, along with Elizabeth Broad from Earth Day New York will be handing out thousands of the free “My Green New York” bags.

As if “free” and “non-plastic canvas bag” wasn’t enough to get you out to the greenmarket, the bags are covered in green living designs created NYC high school and college design students.

A statement from the offices of Council Members Brewer and Felder:

The aim of the “My Green New York” campaign, a joint initiative of Earth Day New York and New York City Council Members Gale A. Brewer and Simcha Felder, is to raise awareness for conservation and sustainability while inspiring enthusiasm and creativity in NYC youth. In conjunction with partners Time Warner Cable and the Durst Organization, thousands of the canvas bags were prepared for distribution. In celebration of the “My Green New York” campaign, the market vendors will be distributing the canvas bags to the public on this day to promote the reduced use of plastic bags in the city.
