Con Ed Sees Record Electricity Usage Spike During Heat Wave… Again

Air Conditioners, Brooklyn Heights
Energy use is going to be setting record after record as our summers grow hotter and more people switch on their A/Cs for longer periods of time.
Last weekend’s spike hit 400,000 megawatts of power.
NY1:
With Tuesday expected to extend the heat wave, with temperatures again reaching into the 90s, the utility is encouraging residents to conserve electricity.
Con Ed suggests turning off appliances when they’re not being used, setting air conditioners no lower than 78 degrees, and closing blinds to keep sun out during the day.
We have to expand use of photovoltaic panels, green roofs, and other methods of green building and smart sustainable design in NYC to reduce energy demand and reduce the risk of dangerous high-temperature blackouts — like what just happened last weekend to 2,000 Con Ed customers in Sunset Park, Bay Ridge, Borough Park, and Park Slope.
Stay tuned for further developments on solar energy initiatives with GBK’s SolarNYC initiative and Solar 1’s I Heart PV campaign.

I fully agree with the need for conservation and new forms of energy, but let’s not be misled. The Sunset Park blackout, in fact the last several, were not caused by a lack of electric supply. they were the result of inadequate supply cables underground. The electric shortage is the ruse by politicians and electric generating companies to build air polluting generating sites in sunset park. the former environmental justice group UPROSE is no longer signaling the alarm since they were bought out by the Mayor. the newer generators are less polluting than the older ones, but in total sunset park will have more air pollution. It is sad when a civic group sells out for a relative’s job in city hall.
