What would Summer be without WATER? The beach… Swimming… Boating or kayaking… Running through the sprinkler… This is IT, baby. Summa-summa-summa time.

And what a better way to celebrate NYC’s waterfront and waterways than a whole day of activities, music, boats, kayaks, bikes and more!

Waterfront Alliance — formerly the Metropolitan Waterfront Alliance — brings you CITY OF WATER DAY!

Saturday, July 26th, 2008
10:00am to 4:00pm
Governor’s Island

Paddlers, sailors, mariners and many others from around the region will converge on Governors Island to eat, drink and have fun.

Highlights of the day will include:

City of Water - July 26 - Urban Divers• A symbolic and inspirational convergence of kayakers, boaters, sailors and ferry-riders onto Governors Island. New York Waterway and the New York Water Taxi will pick kids from across the city and bring them to the Island for this special day of fun, education and adventure.

• Boat parade of working vessels past and present including the retired fireboat John J. Harvey and the Seaport Museum’s tug W.O. Decker.

• Eco-tours of indigenous bird habitats hosted by NYC Audubon and a Hidden Harbor Tour hosted by the Working Harbor Committee.

• Fishing clinics with I Fish New York.

There are 70 participating community groups, non-profit orgs, and companies — almost all local to NYC — involved in this special event. Yes, 70, I counted. Check out the full list here.

Everyone from the Tri-State region is welcome on this spectacular day at no cost.

Free ferry transit will be available all day from Lower Manhattan. Click here for the ferry schedule.

City of Water Day is presented in collaboration with Governors Island Preservation and Education Corp. and Governors Island Alliance.
